a graceful thin lunar crescent is approaching jupiter and saturn before their great conjunction. on december 16 and 17, they formed a magnificent cosmic trio, and on december 21, the great conjunction of the planets will take place. on these days, the planets will be one-tenth of a degree apart — it may seem as if the two planets have merged into one.
eduardo schaberger pupo took this photo from the city of rafaela in argentina. according to him, the old windmill seemed to him the perfect background for the image of the phenomenon.
the conjunction of jupiter and saturn occurs once every 20 years, but it is usually not easy to observe because it occurs close to the sun. but this year the situation is different — the giant planets are approaching in the evening twilight. the last time they were so close and easily visible was in 1226, so such a connection is really a rare historical event.
