Canadian astrophotographer Dar Tanner noticed impressive light columns over the city of Blackfolds in the province of Alberta, resembling searchlights aimed at the sky.

Light poles are a rare phenomenon that is observed in frosty weather under certain conditions. When tiny flat ice crystals form in the atmosphere, they reflect the light of the Sun, Moon, bright stars, or artificial light sources at a certain angle in the form of bright "pillars".
