Neural network revealed previously unknown Nazca geoglyphs

Japanese scientists turned to AI to find new geoglyphs in the north of the Nazca Plateau.

Their search has been conducted since 2004. Scientists are exploring an area of over 390 sq. km by means of aerial photography and satellite images, photography from drones, lidar scanning are carried out.

Geoglyphs are monuments of the most ancient people who lived on the territory of modern Peru. Their creation began around 100 BC, and then new figures were added over the centuries.

Due to their size and location, they cannot be seen from the ground. They were first discovered in 1939, after a scientist from the USA P. Kosok flew around the plateau on an airplane. Now more than 140 figures are known, and experts are still discovering new ones.

Researchers from the Land of the Rising Sun turned to the neural network in order to find drawings that could have been missed during past observations. AI conducted an analysis and identified 4 previously unknown geoglyphs: a bird, a fish, a pair of legs and a figure resembling a man.
