In mid-July, a two-meter rusty metal tank covered with balusters was discovered on the beach by a resident of the village of Green Head. Local police handed over the strange object to the Australian Space Agency for identification.
Scientists examined the object and stated that it was the third stage of the Indian Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle.
The space Agency also stated that its owner should dispose of this part of the rocket, so the fate of space debris will be decided jointly with the Indian side.
Roger Cook, the head of the administration of the state in which the fragment was found, suggested storing the object in the state museum until then — next to the wreckage of the American NASA Skylab orbital station, which fell in Australia in 1979.
The mayor of Green Head, Moira Gilliland, offered to leave the object in the city and install it in one of the parks if India does not want to take it away.
