Mount Etna, the largest of Italy's three active volcanoes, erupted again on Wednesday, spewing lava and thick ash clouds 6 km high, ANSA reports.
Ash from the eruption of the highest active volcano in Europe was carried to nearby Catania, but the airspace of the airport of the eastern Sicilian city was not closed, as it was during some recent eruptions.
The volcano also spewed a stream of fresh lava.
The INGV Institute of Volcanology said that this was the last "paroxysm" in the new phase of Etna's volcanic activity, which began in mid-February.
