Solar omega has risen over the horizon in Spain

A rare image of the sunrise was taken by Spanish photographer Juan Antonio Sendra. Together with their friend, they planned to capture a sailboat against the background of the solar disk, but, by a lucky chance, during the shooting, the sun took on an unusual appearance.

"My friend's sailboat crosses the sun's disk over the Mediterranean sea. Last year we tried to make a similar composition with the Moon, " said Sendra.

The photographer not only managed to implement the idea, but the nature itself added to the picture's effectiveness.

The sun in the background looks like a keyhole, or the Greek letter omega (Ω). In fact, the sun remained round — the illusion is due to layers of warm air and a strong temperature gradient directly above the water, refracting the sun's rays.

"The alpha and the omega, the beginning and the end of... this morning the sun seemed to had come to say goodbye. Of course, it was a strange summer, but there were also very pleasant, special moments, " the photographer wrote in his Instagram.
