Scientists from the famous SETI group reported that they recorded a signal coming from Proxima Centauri, the closest star to our Sun. According to them, this signal can come from an alien civilization, according to the publication Futurism.
The news first appeared in an article in The Guardian late last year. The signal was detected by Breakthrough Listen, a project founded to detect signs of extraterrestrial life.
"This is the first serious candidate after" Wow! signal, " a researcher familiar with the discovery, who wished to remain anonymous, told the journal.
«Wow! signal " was registered in 1977 and is considered the most promising discovery in the history of SETI.
According to sources The Guardian, last year the signal was caught by a telescope from the Parkes Observatory in Australia. Apparently, it came from Proxima Centauri. The signal aroused the interest of researchers for several reasons.
First, it was at frequencies around 980 MHz, i.e. in a range that should not be transmitted from any human spacecraft.
Secondly, the frequency of the signal changes, which, according to scientists, indicates that the signal may come from the surface of a rotating exoplanet, and the aforementioned system is known to have an exoplanet in the habitable zone.
At the moment, a group of scientists is working on this space project, so additional information will be announced as the signal is studied.
The Guardian report was confirmed later in the day by the magazine Scientific American, which shut down better access to the researchers behind the project and reported that they call for skepticism, but surprisingly leave open the possibility that it could be an alien tech signature .
"It's probably some kind of human cause," said Pete Warden, executive director of Breakthrough's parent organization. "And when I say it's probably 99.9 [percent]."
Insiders familiar with the find also explained Scientific American that the signal doesn't seem to contain any information. In other words, it's just a tonal signal that probably comes from a spacecraft launched from Earth.
"If you see such a signal, but it does not come from the surface of the Earth, then you have discovered extraterrestrial technology," he said. Scientific American Jason Wright, a SETI researcher at Penn State University in Pennsylvania . "Unfortunately, humans have launched a lot of extraterrestrial technologies."
