Everyone knows that the Sun is round. But when on 19 April Liselott cans photographed sunset in Denmark, falls behind the horizon the Sun definitely had a rectangular shape.
"It's a Mirage, caused by temperature inversion. Sunlight is refracted in the air layers with different temperatures, distorting the visible shape of the Sun, sometimes as if dividing it into parts," explains atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley.
There is a more extreme version of this illusion, called "New Earth". The effect of the New Samsonblinded near the poles, where the sun's rays repeatedly reflected and distorted in the inversion layers of the atmosphere. These layers distribute the light of the sun, causing the Sun to appear higher than it is. So, over the horizon before the sunrise you can see a solar Mirage in the form of an elongated line or quadrangle.
