The pilot and night photographer Brian Whittaker is able to catch on camera atmospheric wonders during flights between the United States and Europe. Last Tuesday, July 3, he added to his collection a new wonderful picture taken from the cockpit.
"It was a beautiful evening, around shimmering noctilucent clouds that I observed from a height of 11,600 m, but the most amazing thing I have seen is rainbow arising out of an airplane wing," says Whittaker.
"We were flying East from the canadian of Newfoundland, when the rising Moon lit up the vapor trail, creating a rainbow ribbon. At the top shone the stars, the picture was fabulous."
Although we clearly see a rainbow, it is technically wrong. Rainbow called natural optical phenomenon observed in the coverage of water drops of rain or mist. In this case, the vapor trail was filled with ice. Eddies of air off the ends of the wings form a low pressure zone where the water from humid air may condense. Temperature below freezing promotes the formation of ice crystals, which divide the light of the rising moon on the colors of the rainbow.
