On the coastal strip with a length of 2 km near the village of Rybachy in Kaliningrad region were found the remains of several hundred song thrush.
As reported in the press service of the national Park "Kurshskaya Kosa", the mass death of birds was caused by adverse weather conditions. On 27 April there was a mass night migration of thrushes over the Baltic sea. This day was heavy fog, causing many birds lost orientation and was killed. On may 2 there was a storm — because of the West wind, the remains of birds washed up on the shore of the spit.
According to a researcher of the national Park of the Konstantin Ivanyuk, migration over the sea are often, though not in such an amount that leads to the death of migratory birds, but not in every case, their remains washed ashore. This occurs, as a rule, when a fog (what is the result of a spring temperature changes) and starts blowing a strong Western wind.
This phenomenon has over 30 years of watching senior researcher of the biological station "Rybachy", candidate of biological Sciences Anatoly Shapoval. This time on the coast he had observed hundreds of song thrush and a few Robins. In 2013, on the shore of the spit for the same reasons threw lots of blackbirds and chaffinches.
