A mysterious infrasound has been discovered in the Earth's stratosphere, which has not yet been identified. American scientists have designed stratostats that rise to a great height thanks to passive solar energy and are equipped with sensors to capture low-frequency sounds. Each such ball costs only $50 and can be picked up in the basketball hall.
To record low-frequency sounds, the balloons were equipped with microbarometers, originally designed to observe volcanoes. At an altitude of more than 20 km, it was possible to record many already known sounds, including the noise of thunder and collisions of waves in the ocean. However, there was also something mysterious on the recording — infrasound, the nature of which has not yet been determined.
Infrasound occurs as a result of natural phenomena or human actions and is able to spread over long distances. It can have an effect on a person, causing headaches, nausea, irritability and even lead to diseases. Some scientists believe that infrasound can be used as a weapon.
"Infrasound is low—frequency sound waves that can travel long distances and penetrate walls and other obstacles. They can have an effect on a person, causing various physiological reactions," says acoustics expert John Smith.
Currently, scientists continue to study the recordings of infrasound to determine its nature and possible impact on the environment and humans.
