Every fall, a smiley face appears on a hillside on Highway 18 in rural Polk County when the yellow needles turn yellow. It is visible about mile 25 on the highway, between the towns of Grand Ronde and Willamina.
But how did he get there?
The Smiley Face is located on a wooded area owned by Hampton Lumber. It was designed and installed in 2011 by Hampton Lumber co-owner David Hampton and the company's then logging manager, Dennis Creel.
While the eyes and mouth were planted with Douglas fir, the "yellow" smiley face was created by planting larch. Larch trees shed their needles every autumn.
Landing crews used a rope to build a circle and triangulate the location of the eyes and mouth. The face was about 300 feet in diameter.
Passers-by will see the smiley face every fall for the next 30-50 years, until the trees are ready to be cut down and processed into lumber.
