In Rome, hundreds of birds died because of New Year's fireworks-eyewitnesses took video of many starlings lying on the streets of the Eternal City. Residents and visitors of Rome said that the birds simply fell dead on the pavement, becoming victims of fireworks. Especially many dead birds are seen near the Termini railway station in the heart of the city.

Presumably, the birds could have died due to cardiac arrest — because of the fireworks, they were disoriented and frightened. In flight, they crashed into power lines and windows.

Volunteers and representatives of animal protection organizations are outraged that, despite the fines imposed by the authorities of 500 euros, people continue to launch fireworks, which leads to the death of birds.
