EL PASO, Texas - It's a bird, it's a plane ... Is this a UFO? No, it's just a U.S. Army exercise organized at Fort Bliss.

Military officials told ABC-7 on Tuesday that recent sightings of mysterious lights over the northeast El Paso sky at night have a very simple explanation - and it's not related to aliens.

"The lights seen over the weekend are artillery rockets," explained Gilbert Telles Jr., a Fort Bliss public relations specialist. "There was a training session at the Dona Ana training ground that early evening."

Military personnel use artillery rockets as signaling devices to mark targets or illuminate the area under and around them.

ABC-7 received numerous requests from residents who observed the lightballs and wondered what they saw. Of course, some people on social media suggested that this was an alien encounter, but the military assures us that this is not the case.
