Any city is full of its own legends and horror stories, and Volgograd is no exception. Over the 430 years of its existence, the city has accumulated many such stories. We have collected the most famous of them.

A jealous merchant-killer

Not far from the blood transfusion station, according to legend, the Ghost of a jealous merchant wanders.

It turns out that earlier, in the time of Tsaritsyn, there was a cemetery and a Church attached to it. It was from her porch that the local merchant saw the girl with whom he was completely in love, passing in a carriage with another young man in his arms.

Full of anger, the jealous man jumped into the carriage and stabbed the couple in love.

He tried to wash the blood from his clothes in the Volga, but could not, and full of grief by midnight returned to the scene of the crime to drive a knife into his heart.

Now people occasionally see a man with glowing hands walking through the air in this place.

The victims of the NKVD

Mysticism is also shrouded in the hotel of the regional headquarters of the Ministry of internal Affairs on barricadnaya street in the Voroshilovsky district.

In Soviet times, the once merchant building was transferred to the NKVD, and its rooms were turned into cells, interrogation rooms, and torture rooms. And in the courtyard of the house, shootings were carried out. The basement was occupied by the morgue.

For a long time there is no NKVD or the USSR, but even now guests and hotel workers talk about translucent silhouettes roaming the corridors.

Security guards and administrators never go down to the basement one by one at night, because there are shouts and footsteps coming from there. There are versions that the bones of those who were shot on the site of the house, immured in the Foundation of the building.

Bald mountain

Bald mountains are in many cities and it is considered that they become the focus of all sorts of mysticism. Volgograd mountain in the Sovetsky district is no exception.

People say that the way to and from the mountain can take a completely different amount of time. Some here see indistinct figures along the road.

And local residents talk about a mysterious car that passes on the way to Bald mountain, leaving no traces even in the snow and disappears.

Cossack theater and the drowned woman

There is a fairly common opinion among local historians that the building, now a Cossack theater, was built by Tsaritsyn merchant and timber merchant Alexander Shlykov in memory of his young daughter, who drowned in the Volga.

The bas-reliefs on the walls of the house are proof of this. They depict the same girl in a pearl shell, whose face can hardly be called beautiful. There are bags under the eyes, lips are curled, and facial features are made quite roughly. It is believed that the author of the bas-reliefs showed an exact portrait resemblance to the drowned woman.

Until now, the theater's caretakers say that at night, the building can hear booming footsteps, as if someone is walking along the corridors in heavy shoes. And on the landing appears the silhouette of a white girl in a long dress.

Ghost in a dress

Another story doesn't have such deep roots, but it doesn't make it any less creepy. According to one of the city's legends, a terrible crime occurred in a ravine on Dzerzhinskiy street in the North of the city – a young girl was raped and killed there.

People don't tell the details of the story itself. It is not known when this happened or what happened to the murderers, but the girl is still seen, they say.

She stands on the road in a summer dress at any time of the year, which makes passing drivers seriously scared.

Soldiery

They say that Volgograd stands on bones. This is not what they say about specific parts of the city, but about the whole city. Of course, it was one of the bloodiest battles in the history of mankind.

Perhaps it is not surprising that people talk about the many ghosts of soldiers who died in those years. Some hear marching and shouting on Mamayev Kurgan, others say they see translucent figures in military uniforms. Some, they say, are even approached by wounded, bloodied and bandaged soldiers who ask for a cigarette and then disappear into the darkness.
