The word "skookum" translated with a now dead dialect of the Chinook (jargon, which was spoken by the local Indians and came white on the North-West Pacific coast) means "powerful", "strong", "brave". He has, however, and other values, in particular the "evil spirit" and "monstrous."

For the first time this word is mentioned (1859.) in a book by Paul Kane, artist and writer, who travelled on the route Vancouver – or – Vancouver. Kane was unusual creative person and paintings, written during his amazing travels, are now the true historical value.

Paul Kane painted landscapes, but more often the Indians, the indigenous inhabitants of these lands. In March 1847 he is accompanied by a group of aboriginal people got to the vicinity of mount St Helens (Washington state) and wanted to approach her, but the Indians began to violently discourage the artist.

Here is what he wrote:

"I stopped to draw a volcano St Helens, which was 30-40 miles away. This mountain does not rise, neither white nor Indian. As claimed last, there live beings absolutely different race – cannibals, feared by all the surrounding population..."

Next, Kane writes that this tradition has arisen not on an empty place: once upon a time two Indians went to St Helens and back back only one. The second killed and ate terrible skookum, even the bones are not left.

Indians kinoki accused of sukumo in all his misfortunes, believing that they cause these bloodthirsty creatures. Questioning the natives, Kane learned that the "evil spirit" (as the writer has translated the name), though living at St Helens, but can easily descend the mountain and walk through the flat countryside nearby.

All this is so intrigued by Kane that he asked one of the Indians to be his escort to the mountain (of course, for a good reward). However, of this venture nothing happened.

Residents of Oregon, that is, the neighbors of Chinook, also known these beings, whom they consider evil spirits and at the same time something like the devils. Demons can turn into animals and even possess humans.

Cryptozoology I believe that we are most likely talking about the famous Bigfoot, as some Indian legends describe sukuma as an APE-like creature at the same time very similar in my mind to people.

However, the Yeti, as you know, I try not to attack people, and especially never eat. However, perhaps we just don't know about such cases because of the lack of reliable data.

...In 1924, as suggested, it is sukuma saw the miners conducting exploration near mount St. Helens. Men were working when one of them noticed on the cliff of a huge bipedal beast. One of the workers fired three shots into the monster – and he flew into the abyss, the body to find it somehow and failed. At night, however, several of these creatures appeared at a miner's camp and began to throw stones at him. Men seized their guns, but many of their shots did not reach their destination the next morning around destroyed the camp I could see a lot of huge tracks – and only.

In the 90-ies of the last century studying Bigfoot Henry Franzoni became interested in sukuma and found out that in the territory of Washington there are dozens of names that use the word. It is, as a rule, the names of the trails, small gorges, mountain streams, etc. it is Logical to assume that in these places people have seen fierce and ruthless "evil spirit" of sukuma. But who is he, where is why, as the legendary Bigfoot, the elusive and even invulnerable to bullets, and it remains a mystery...
