Initial data
The nature of the ball lightning is still unsolved. This is a very rare phenomenon, it has not yet been possible to reproduce it in the laboratory. The dimensions of ball lightning can be from 1 cm to 27 meters. You can meet various assumptions about the nature of ball lightning, up to UFOs.
According to one hypothesis, ball lightning is powered by radio emission that occurs during lightning discharges. According to another version, it is a ball of plasma. However, scientists say that such an education cannot exist for a long time. Other experts claim that ball lightning is nothing more than the electroluminescence of air created by the excitation of nitrogen atoms. However, so far none of the hypotheses has found serious confirmation.
July 16, 2000 turned out to be cloudless and hot. But in the evening clouds appeared, and the rain began to pour. Lightning rumbled terribly. And at half past nine, a ball lightning appeared at the intersection of Tchaikovsky and Pobedy Avenue. It was she who managed to notice the driver of the 14th tram Tatiana Trofimchuk. When she was approaching the bus stop, a clot of flame hit the cab. She only managed to automatically press the brake and immediately jumped into the cabin. The tram stopped, but the electrical equipment closed everything. And most importantly, the doors were jammed, it was impossible to open them! And at this time, a fire had already started blazing in the cabin.
Passengers, and there were only a few of them - 13 people, rushed to knock out windows. Which turned out to be quite difficult. The glass in the tram is very strong. The men, grasping the handrails under the ceiling with their hands, tried to squeeze out the glass with their feet. Finally, in one place it fell out.
- It was very smoky in the cabin, - Tatyana Evgenyevna told reporters later.- I saw people running to the tram from all sides and pulling passengers out through the broken windows. A terrible sight!
Hypotheses
Ball lightning
A rare natural phenomenon, a unified physical theory of the origin and course of which has not been presented to date.
There are about 200 theories explaining the phenomenon, but none of them has received absolute recognition in the academic environment. Since this phenomenon was introduced into the scientific sphere by the English physician and researcher of electrical engineering William Snow Harris in 1843, and a scientist of the French Academy Francois Arago in 1855, many hypotheses were put forward. Here are selectively some of them:
