The celestial object that was spotted over the southern regions of Russia was presumably Elon Musk's Starlink-2653 satellite. This is stated in the Telegram channel of the association of astronomers AstroAlert from Arkhyz.
The day before, the Telegram channel Sochi News reported that a mysterious fiery object swept over the Krasnodar Territory, Stavropol Territory, Karachay-Cherkessia and Kalmykia. Initially, it was assumed that the incident could be related to the burning of space debris moving at low speed.
An unidentified flying object began to disintegrate near Stavropol, and then a series of fragments were observed over Elista.
"The culprit of the heavenly show has been found. This is most likely Starlink-2653 (No. 48665 in the general catalog of spacecraft)," AstroAlert wrote.
After Russia, the satellite flew through the center of the Sahara Desert, the Mediterranean Sea, Turkey, the Black Sea, Sochi and further over the north of the Caspian Sea. According to forecasts, the satellite was supposed to fall on May 22 at 21.52 Moscow time, but its fall occurred an hour earlier.
