Near the coast of Antarctica is an island called Deception. Although it looks like a safe haven (and it usually does), but actually the island is an active volcano. The last time it erupted in the 1960-ies that have caused serious damage to local research stations. Hidden dangers of the island it is still possible to determine due to the special rainbows on the beach.
George Kourounis took this picture on November 25. According to him, he was on the beach when he spotted her. Hot water flows under the beach, around a huge Caldera. The sand was literally steaming from the volcanic heat below. When the sun came out, you could see the steam arc. In the background you notice a rigid inflatable boat used for going on shore. It was the ship's first voyage RCGS Resolute, and the last day of the landfall before heading back through the Drake passage to South America. As noted Kourounis, "a perfect choice to complete the trip in Antarctica".
Steam arc (steambows) is a distant cousin of the rainbow. They appear when sunlight penetrates the clouds of tiny water droplets. The reverse dispersion and diffraction of light, thus formed pale arc with the rainbow border.
