Earlier this week, a once-in-a-lifetime sight took place in a city in southern China: a bright rainbow-colored cloud swept over a thunderstorm.
A stunning cloud has formed over Haikou, a city of two million in southern China. In the hot air over Haikou, a cumulus cloud sprouted around sunset. But it was not the cumulus cloud itself that attracted attention, but the incredible formation that towered over it.
Such a cloud is "pileus" (pileus) — formed as a result of cooling and condensation of moist air. When sunlight is directed at right angles, it is refracted between drops and ice crystals in the cloud, creating a "curved" rainbow.
