In a recent photo from the American Perseverance device, a rainbow seems to be visible. But since the planet's dry atmosphere does not contain water droplets, this could not be the colorful arc known to us from terrestrial landscapes. What is it then?
When the photo went viral, users put forward several plausible explanations: some talked about dust motes, others about glare and optical artifacts.
Soon NASA gave a competent answer.
According to Andrew Goode, a PR officer, it's all about the Hazcam lens catching the glare. The front lenses of the device are equipped with sunscreens, but the rear ones were decided not to be equipped like this. Therefore, in the photos taken by these cameras, the appearance of such artifacts is possible.
As a rule, 4 front and 2 rear cameras are used to monitor potentially dangerous objects and landscapes on the route.
