According to mythological dictionary the dwarves in the lowest mythology of peoples of Europe called little anthropomorphic creatures, often living in the mountains (rarely underground or in the forest). The origin of this word is debatable: it is taken from the Latin language from "gēnomos" – "underground dweller", or from Greek "Γνώση" – knowledge.

Gnomes popularized (in another version – up) alchemist Paracelsus in the sixteenth century, although in the folklore of European peoples they met much earlier. Paracelsus describes dwarfs as beings rising two inches (about 40 cm), are extremely reluctant to come into contact with people and are able to move through earth as easily as humans move through space.

Ideas about such creatures exist in many cultures, but not in all languages they are called "dwarf". For example, the Germans call them "dwarfs" ("zwerg"), British – "dwarves" ("dwarf" to mean "dwarf"). From the old Norse "dvergr" occurred drevneishei German "twerg". According to Vladimir Orel, both of these names comes from protogermanskimi "đwerȝaz". In the French language of the dwarves is called "nain", Italy — "nano", both words from the Greek "νᾶνος" — "tiny". In other European languages, has its words that are not associated with any of these roots – Polish "krasnolud" Finnish "kääpiö", Czech "trpaslík" and others. Philological research has also shown that in Russian literature beginning of the XIX century, along with the "dwarf", often met variant of "Karl".

According to ancient legends, the dwarves originally belonged to the lower magical creatures, but was not physically of small stature. Ideas about dwarfs as creatures of small stature appeared after the spread of Christianity.

The first literary sources, which refer to the gnomes, was an Icelandic heroic songs of the 13th century from the collection of the “Elder Edda” and “Younger Edda”, compiled by the poet and skald Snorri Sturluson, who lived at the turn of the 12th and 13th centuries. Both literary works contain mythological tales ages 8-10, as well as elements of Germanic heroic epic beginning of the 13th century.

Usually dwarves believe the spirits of the earth and the mountains, guarding the underground treasures. In alchemy and the occult, they are considered spirits of the earth as the primary element, and, accordingly, the elementals of the earth. Because of these representations of dwarfs are often endowed with various supernatural powers, including supernatural skill and wealth.

Describe dwarves in different ways. Their height varies from finger size up to the height of a small child. Male dwarves usually wear long beards, and sometimes endowed with a goat's foot or crow's feet. Men-dwarves do not differ special beauty, unlike the dwarf women (called "gnmidi").

Description of the dwarves in "the Book of imaginary beings" by Jorge Luis Borges: "the folk imagination represents them in the form of a bearded dwarf with a tough and funny facial features; they are dressed in narrow brown chattaniki and monastic hoods."

According to ancient legends, the dwarves, similar to fairies, love to tease people, but do them more good than evil. They can give some kind of magical artifact, to indicate the place where treasures are hidden, or to do some small request or order.

In the modern culture of the dwarves remember and love. They are in huge numbers in the fantasy stories in literature, cinema, computer games, and on the lawns of the Europeans and Americans can be seen figures garden gnomes set there as guardians of the earth. While pop culture has gone far from the original ideas about dwarfs and is based more on the characters described in the well-known works of fiction (which, for example, often contain jokes about dwarf women, giving them a beard, mustache or simply indistinguishable from the male structure of the body). These dwarves his behavior not much different from the fairies, goblins and other mystical creatures. They rarely distinguished by some characteristic features, in addition to the growth or caricature "dwarven" - like appearance of the aforementioned garden statue.

Due to the fact that the dwarves are now perceived primarily as the characters of fairy tales along with a fairy (which, however, does not prevent adults, and to periodically meet and even photographed last), witnesses the dwarves quite a bit, but Yes, and those are rarely taken seriously (in contrast to witnesses, for example, ghosts or aliens).
